The first Afghanistan banknotes were issued by the Afghan Treasury in 1919 during the reign of Amanullah Khan. The first notes were denominated in Afghan rupees, the official currency until 1926. One rupee equals 100 paiese. After 1926, the official currency changed to the afghani, with one afghani equal to 100 puli.
